What We Install, Part by Part

A water softener is four parts: a fiberglass tank, a control valve on top, the resin and carbon inside it, and a brine tank for the salt. Every brand sells that same arrangement. So the name on the tank tells you less than who made each part, what it is certified to, and what the warranty says. Here is ours, in the open, the same detail that is on every quote we send.

The parts

Who makes each part

Our whole home systems are assembled in Fort Worth, Texas from parts made by the companies below. These are the same makers you will find inside most softeners sold under a dealer’s own label; the difference is that we name them.

Control valveHankscraft ceramic disc valve, assembled in Wisconsin. Programmable, meters your actual use, 72 hour memory backup if the power goes out.
Mineral tankEnpress fiberglass pressure tank, made in Ohio. 10 by 54 inches on the Standard, 12 by 52 on the XL, 10 by 60 on each tank of the Dual Tank.
Softening resinResinTech CG10 strong acid cation resin, 10 percent crosslinked, made in Camden, New Jersey. WQA Gold Seal certified.
CarbonJacobi granular activated coconut shell carbon, for chlorine, taste and odor.
Support beddingNSF certified polishing gravel under the media.
Bypass1 inch full flow bypass, included, with 1 inch NPT elbows.
AssemblyThe parts are put together into a system in Fort Worth, Texas, and installed by our licensed New Jersey plumber.

The systems

The systems we install

Which one you get depends on your water, your household and whether you are on a well. Your quote names the system, the price installed and the tax, and shows this same list of what is inside.

The whole home system: softener and carbon filtration in one tank, plumbed into the main line

Complete Home Softener and Filtration System, Standard

Standard: 10 by 54 tank, 1.5 cubic feet of media

One 10 by 54 tank with 1.5 cubic feet of resin and carbon: softening and filtration for every tap, sized by the supplier for up to three bathrooms.

  • 48,000 grain USA resin with coconut shell carbon
  • Hankscraft ceramic disc valve, programmable, 72 hour memory backup
  • 27 GPM service flow, 1 inch bypass, 15 by 35 brine tank

Certified: NSF/ANSI 44, 42 and 61.

The whole home system, extra large: the same tank, valve and media, sized for the bigger house

Complete Home Softener and Filtration System, Extra Large

Extra Large: 12 by 52 tank, 2 cubic feet of media

One 12 by 52 tank with 2 cubic feet of resin and carbon, for the bigger house. Same valve, media and certifications as the Standard.

  • 64,000 grain USA resin with coconut shell carbon
  • Hankscraft ceramic disc valve, programmable, 72 hour memory backup
  • 27 GPM service flow, 1 inch bypass, 15 by 35 brine tank

Certified: NSF/ANSI 44, 42 and 61.

The dual tank system: the softener and the carbon filter in tanks of their own, on the main line

Dual Tank System for City Water

Dual tank: two 10 by 60 tanks

One tank of carbon and one tank of resin, each with its own ProValve, and one brine tank. The carbon tank backwashes itself.

  • Two 10 by 60 tanks: 1.5 cubic feet of 48,000 grain resin in one, 1.5 cubic feet of coconut shell carbon in the other
  • About 9 pounds of salt per regeneration; the brine tank holds 150 pounds
  • Catalytic carbon upgrade for chloramine towns
The two tank well water system: the softener, the air injection tank for iron and sulfur, and the brine tank

Dual Tank System for Well Water

Dual tank for wells: softener plus air injection

A softener in one tank and, first in line, an air injection tank of catalytic carbon and Katalox Light for iron, sulfur and manganese. No chemicals to refill. Sized from your lab test.

  • Two 10 by 60 tanks: 1.5 cubic feet of 48,000 grain CG10 resin in one, catalytic carbon and Katalox Light in the other
  • Air injection AIO ProValve over the well media; both tanks backwash themselves
  • Sized from a certified lab test, never from the phone
The carbon filter on the main line. No softening, so nothing to refill with salt

Carbon Only Whole Home Filter

Carbon only: 10 by 54 tank, pass through valve

A 10 by 54 tank of coconut shell carbon with a pass through valve: filtration for the whole home without softening. No salt, no drain, no electricity.

  • Coconut shell carbon for chlorine, taste and odor
  • 10 by 54 Enpress tank, pass through head, no regeneration
The softener on the main line, with the head that runs it

Softener Only

Softener only: 10 by 54 tank, resin only

A 10 by 54 resin only tank, no carbon: softening for every tap without the filtration.

  • 48,000 grain USA resin
  • Hankscraft ceramic disc valve, programmable, 72 hour memory backup
  • 15 by 35 brine tank
The reverse osmosis unit and its tank, under the kitchen sink

Reverse osmosis, under the kitchen sink

Six stage with a tank, or the HW800 AlkaPro tankless

For drinking and cooking: five stages then the minerals put back, into a small pressurized tank, or the tankless HW800 that makes water as you draw it.

  • Sediment pre filter, two NSF carbon blocks, NSF thin film composite membrane
  • Carbon polish, then alkaline minerals put back
  • A dedicated drinking water faucet in chrome, matte black or brushed gold

Certified: HW800 AlkaPro: NSF/ANSI 58 for TDS reduction and for materials and structural integrity; NSF 372 lead free water path.

The sediment filter, first in line where the water comes in

Pre System Sediment Filter

20 by 4.5 inch housing, 5 micron cartridge

First in line at the main water entry: stops sand, silt and rust before they reach the softener, the carbon or the reverse osmosis.

  • 15 gallons a minute, so you never feel it in the shower
  • A cartridge lasts about 10,000 gallons
The ultraviolet purifier, last in line on the main line

Whole House Ultraviolet Purifier

Stainless chamber, lamp with a spare, quartz sleeve

Last in line, after the sediment filter and the softener, for a well that tested positive for bacteria or a household that wants it regardless.

  • Stainless steel chamber with mounting clamps
  • The lamp, its spare and the quartz sleeve are in the box

Certifications

Certified, and where to check

The Standard and XL whole home systems are certified to three NSF/ANSI standards. Nothing we install is certified to NSF/ANSI 53, the health contaminant standard, and we do not say otherwise; the reverse osmosis at the kitchen tap is the stage that handles dissolved contaminants, and the tankless HW800 carries its own NSF/ANSI 58 certification for that.

Questions

Make, model and brand

Is a brand name softener better than this one?

A softener is a fiberglass tank, a control valve on top, resin and carbon inside, and a brine tank for the salt. Every brand sells that arrangement. What differs is who made each part, what it is certified to, and what the warranty says, so that is what this page lists. Compare those three things across any two quotes and the label on the tank stops mattering.

Why is there no model number on the quote?

Because a model number would name the label on the tank, and the label is not the maker. The systems are assembled in Fort Worth, Texas from parts made by other companies, which is how most softeners are built. The quote names the system you are getting under the price, with the valve, tank, resin and carbon and who makes each. That list tells you more than a model number does.

Where is it made?

The valve is assembled in Wisconsin by Hankscraft, the tank is made in Ohio by Enpress, the resin is made in Camden, New Jersey by ResinTech, and the system is put together in Fort Worth, Texas. The carbon is coconut shell carbon from Jacobi.

Can I check the certifications myself?

Yes. NSF keeps a public directory of certified drinking water treatment units, linked below by standard, and the resin maker’s WQA Gold Seal certificate is on this page as a PDF. Our warranty statement is a PDF here too, the same one that comes with every quote.
