The short version
Hard water is water carrying a lot of dissolved calcium and magnesium. Most of central New Jersey has it. New Jersey American Water's own quality sheets list 6 to 7 grains per gallon in Union County towns like Westfield, Cranford and Clark, and 5 to 13 grains per gallon across its wider Raritan and Short Hills systems. In southeast Morris County, the water authority's 2024 report lists sources ranging from soft all the way up to about 23 grains per gallon, well past the very hard line.

Hard water is considered safe to drink. But when it is heated, the minerals come out of solution as scale. Independent lab research funded by the Water Quality Research Foundation found hard water can cut gas water heater efficiency by as much as 24 percent, and clogged showerheads lost most of their flow in under 18 months.
The fix is an ion-exchange water softener certified to NSF/ANSI 44, sized to your actual hardness and household. The first step is knowing your number. What water hardness is, and how the scale works
Rain starts out soft. As water moves through soil and rock, it picks up minerals, mainly compounds of calcium and magnesium. The U.S. Geological Survey notes hard water is most common where water passes through carbonate rock and mineral-rich aquifers, the same geology limestone belongs to. The more of these minerals your water carries, the harder it is.
Hardness is measured two ways: milligrams per liter (mg/L, same as parts per million) of calcium carbonate, or grains per gallon (gpg). One grain per gallon equals about 17.1 mg/L. The USGS scale:
- Soft: 0 to 60 mg/L (up to about 3.5 gpg)
- Moderately hard: 61 to 120 mg/L (about 3.5 to 7 gpg)
- Hard: 121 to 180 mg/L (about 7 to 10.5 gpg)
- Very hard: more than 180 mg/L (over 10.5 gpg)
The Minnesota Department of Health, one of the plainer-spoken state health agencies on this topic, puts the practical line at 7 gpg or 120 mg/L. Above that, it says, you might need a softener to keep appliances running well and improve how the water looks, tastes and smells.
Why central New Jersey water runs hard
Central Jersey's big systems draw from the Raritan and Millstone rivers, the Delaware and Raritan Canal, and roughly 98 wells in mineral-rich formations like the Brunswick aquifer. That geology is why the water runs hard, and the numbers below come off the utilities' own published reports, not guesswork:
- NJ American Water, Raritan System 1 (Westfield, Cranford, Clark, Garwood, Linden, Roselle, Roselle Park and nearby towns): typical hardness of 104 to 130 mg/L, or 6 to 7 gpg. That straddles the moderately hard and hard bands. This is the former Elizabethtown Water Company territory; NJDEP's source water assessment lists it as the Elizabethtown Division.
- NJ American Water, Raritan System 2 (towns in Somerset, Hunterdon and Mercer counties, plus Chester in Morris County): 90 to 222 mg/L, or 5 to 13 gpg, reaching very hard at the top of the range.
- NJ American Water, Short Hills system (Berkeley Heights, New Providence, Watchung, Long Hill and nearby towns): also 90 to 222 mg/L, 5 to 13 gpg.
- Southeast Morris County MUA (Morristown, Morris Township, Morris Plains, Hanover, plus customers in Chatham Township, Florham Park, Mendham, Harding, Randolph and Parsippany-Troy Hills): the 2024 report lists hardness from 29 to 400 ppm, about 1.7 to 23.4 gpg, depending on the source. Some sources exceed the state's recommended upper limit of 250 ppm, which the authority attributes partly to road de-icing salt.
NJ American Water does not soften its water, and it notes hardness can climb during dry spells. Other parts of Essex County are served by different systems, and hardness varies from one to the next. That is why the number that matters is the one at your own tap.
What hard water does to your home
Heat is what turns hardness into damage. When hard water is heated, calcium carbonate comes out of solution and sticks to hot surfaces as scale. The USGS notes this buildup shortens equipment life, raises heating costs and can clog pipes.
A 2009 study by the Battelle Memorial Institute, funded by the Water Quality Research Foundation, put numbers on it:
- Gas tank water heaters on hard water lost up to 24 percent of their efficiency. Roughly every 5 gpg of hardness cost about 4 percent in efficiency at 50 gallons of hot water per day.
- Heaters running on softened water held their factory efficiency rating over a simulated 15-year life.
- Tankless water heaters on 26 gpg water plugged with scale after the equivalent of about 1.6 years of use.
- Electric tank heaters accumulated up to 30 pounds of rock-like scale.
- Showerheads on hard water lost 75 percent of their flow in under 18 months.
The everyday signs are smaller but constant: white spots on glassware, crust on showerheads and faucets, soap that will not lather, stiff laundry. Many people also notice a filmy, dry feeling on skin and dull hair, which is largely soap and mineral residue left behind. A companion detergent study found that once water was softened, laundry came out as clean or cleaner with half the detergent in 60-degree water instead of 100-degree water, and dishwasher detergent use could drop by up to 70 percent.
How a water softener works, in plain English
An ion-exchange softener is a tank of tiny resin beads. As water passes through, the beads grab calcium and magnesium ions and release sodium (or potassium) ions in trade. The minerals that cause scale stay behind on the resin. The water that comes out the other side is soft.
Eventually the beads fill up. The softener then runs a regeneration cycle, usually overnight: it rinses the resin with brine from the salt tank, flushes the captured minerals and excess salt down the drain, and is ready to work again. The brine never flows to your faucets; it is only used to clean the resin.
Look for equipment certified to NSF/ANSI 44, the American national standard for residential cation-exchange softeners. Certification is not a sticker. Per NSF's published requirements, a certified softener has passed a materials-safety extraction test showing nothing harmful leaches into your water, structural testing including 100,000 pressure cycles, and capacity testing on water of 20 gpg hardness, with its rated capacity verified at the salt settings the manufacturer specifies. The standard even limits how much residual chloride the post-regeneration rinse can leave in the treated water. Demand-initiated models can also carry salt- and water-efficiency ratings, which matter for operating cost.
Sizing, salt and sodium, without the myths
Softeners are sized in grains: how much hardness the resin can hold between regenerations. The math is simple. Daily grains equal your hardness in gpg times the gallons your household uses. The EPA says the average American family uses more than 300 gallons per day at home. On 7 gpg water, that is about 2,100 grains a day, or roughly 14,700 a week. A common sizing target is a unit that regenerates about once a week rather than every night, which saves salt and water. Setting the unit to your actual tested hardness matters; set too high, it wastes salt and water every cycle.
Now the salt questions, honestly:
- Softened water is not salt water. The exchange adds sodium ions in proportion to the hardness removed. The chloride half of the salt goes down the drain during regeneration.
- Your water already contains sodium. The Raritan system's quality sheet lists 31 to 36 mg/L of sodium before any home treatment.
- No health claims from us. The Minnesota Department of Health advises anyone with a history of high blood pressure to talk with their doctor about drinking softened water. Practical options it lists: keep an unsoftened tap for drinking and cooking, or regenerate with potassium chloride instead of sodium chloride.
- Regeneration uses water. NJ American Water, citing Consumer Reports, puts it at 15 to 120 gallons per 1,000 gallons treated. Efficiency-rated, demand-initiated units typically sit at the low end.
- You do not have to soften everything. Toilets, hose bibs and other cold outdoor taps usually do not need soft water.

Reducing contaminants like lead or PFAS requires equipment certified to other NSF/ANSI standards for that specific contaminant, and confirming a contaminant in the first place calls for testing by a NJDEP-certified lab.
