How water softener sizing works
Softener resin holds a fixed amount of hardness between regenerations, measured in grains. Your household’s daily grain load is the water you use times the hardness in it. A family of four at 75 gallons each uses about 300 gallons a day. On 7 grain water that is 2,100 grains a day; on 20 grain water it is 6,000. Multiply by seven for a weekly cycle, add a reserve so the unit is not running to empty, and round up to the next standard capacity: 24,000, 32,000, 48,000, or 64,000 grains.

A correctly sized softener on moderately hard water typically uses a 40 pound bag of salt roughly every four to eight weeks, while an undersized unit regenerating every other day can double that.
